Frequently Asked Questions:
GENERAL QUESTIONS:
How do I place an order?
Please contact us for specific ordering information - 800-577-1555 or use our Contact Form. We do accept Purchase Orders, VISA, Mastercard or American Express.
PORTABLE STAIRLIFTS:
What are the advantages of the Scalachair vs Scalaport accessories used with the Scalamobil?
The scalachair is the most popular accessory because it is narrow and light and easily transported at stairway curves and tight turns. The typical use is to transport a person from bedroom (upstairs) to a vehicle at the street or garage. The scalaport is ideal for children's wheelchairs or where multiple chairs are in use. The scalaport adjusts to accept most types of manual wheelchairs. The two accessories are not easily interchangeable.
Are portable stairlifts covered by insurance?
There is no private or public insurance benefit for installed or portable stairlifts. The only exception may be with individual state funding for people with disabilities, Veterans Affairs (VA) or workers compensation.
How long does the stair lift climber remain attached to the wheelchair?
The portable stairlift is only used for stair transport and possible short transport to bedroom or vehicle. It is quickly released from the wheelchair when not needed at the stairs.
How do I get service for my stair climber?
Although service problems and parts replacement is rare, all service and repair is available via MAX-Ability. In extreme cases loaners are available. Battery replacement is the most common service and this is accomplished with battery pack exchange usually not exceeding $150.00 (approximately every four years).
Is there any manual lifting involved on or off the stairs while using the stair climber?
No. The Scalamobil and Stair-Trac do the heavy lifting on the stairs and have wheels for traversing or turning on a flat surface.
How long do the batteries last?
The Scalamobil and Stair-Trac may be used several times per day on one battery charge. The automatic charger should be plugged in every night. The batteries should be replaced every four years. Battery packs are readily available from MAX-Ability.
Do portable stair climbers replace installed stairlifts?
Not necessarily. Installed stair lifts may be ideal for independent riders who are ambulatory and not required to have an attendant or caregiver.
Are portable stairlifts difficult to operate?
The portable stairlift provides attended, motorized transportation on the stairs. The device does all of the heavy lifting when moving up or down the stairs. The device can be stopped and started with the operator in control of all movement. Both the Stair-Trac and Scalamobil require a limited amount of physical ability. The physical aspects of operating the stair chairs depends somewhat on the stair configuration and the weight of the rider. Both products are in the braked mode when stopped or parked on the stairs.
Is the portable stair lift safe?
Our portable stair climbers have 25+ years of safety and reliability. Each application is professionally evaluated to assure a safe ride up and down the stairs. The key aspects of the safety evaluation include the condition of the rider, the stairway configuration, and the product operation ability of the caregiver. At delivery, training and practice are prerequisits for safe, comfortable stairway access.
